RJ Manuelian discusses testimony of a cousin of Dr. Yazeed Essa who fled to Lebanon before his wife’s death was ruled a homicide. The Los Angeles criminal defense attorney discusses legal strategies, including impeachment of a witness. Essa was an emergency room doctor in Akron but fled to Lebanon after his wife’s death. Last year, he gave up an extradition fight and was returned from Cyprus to Ohio. Dr. Essa’s cousin, Jamal Khalife, testified that while Dr. Essa was in Beirut, he bragged about killing his wife. The prosecutor’s theory is that he placed cyanide on his wife’s calcium pills in order to kill her. Prosecutors theory was that Essa was trying to escape a loveless marriage and wanted to live with his mistress. But the theory Essa’s attorneys have offered the jury implicates another of his longtime lovers, Marguerita Montanez. Defense lawyers say Montanez was infatuated with Essa for nearly a decade, was deeply envious of his wife and had both the means and the motive to kill her. His motives and defenses are discussed by RJ Manuelian.
